Spring Road Trip Europe 2026: 8 Scenic Routes

Plan your perfect spring road trip Europe 2026 with 8 scenic routes through stunning landscapes, charming villages, and iconic destinations across the EU.

Coastal cliffside town with white buildings, greenery, and a row of scooters along a waterfront road by the blue sea at sea level.

Spring road trips across Europe offer something no other travel experience can match: freedom, variety, and landscapes that change every hour. In 2026, the roads are open and the conditions are ideal. The European Union connects 27 countries through an extensive network of highways, mountain passes, and coastal roads. Whether you prefer alpine peaks, golden coastlines, or rolling countryside, a spring road trip in Europe puts all of it within reach. April, May, and June bring mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and long daylight hours. This guide covers 8 scenic routes that deliver exceptional experiences for every type of traveller.

Route 1: The Romantic Road, Germany

The Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse) stretches 460 kilometres from Wurzburg in the north to Fussen in the south. It passes through some of Germany’s most charming medieval villages, including Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Dinkelsbuhl.

Spring is the ideal season for this route. Orchards bloom along the roadside, and the famous Neuschwanstein Castle appears even more dramatic against a clear May sky. Traffic is significantly lower than in summer.

Additionally, the road passes directly through Bavaria’s wine country. Stop in Wurzburg for local Franconian wine before continuing south toward the Alps.

Route 2: The Amalfi Coast, Italy

The Amalfi Coast road runs 50 kilometres along the Sorrentine Peninsula in southern Italy. It is one of the most dramatic coastal drives in the world, with steep cliffs dropping directly to turquoise water.

Spring arrivals in April and May avoid the intense July heat and the heavy summer traffic. The road is narrow and requires careful driving, particularly at bends near Positano and Ravello. Nevertheless, the views are genuinely extraordinary.

Stop in Ravello for panoramic gardens, and take the ferry from Amalfi town to Salerno for a memorable end to the route.

Route 3: The Ring Road Detour, Ireland (EU Context: Green Travel Zone)

Though not an EU member, Ireland participates in EU transport and tourism networks and remains popular with European travellers. The Wild Atlantic Way stretches 2,500 kilometres along the western coastline.

For spring visitors, the section from Galway to Clifden offers the best combination of dramatic scenery and manageable distance. Green fields, stone walls, and Atlantic views define every kilometre.

Moreover, spring light in Ireland has a quality unlike anywhere else. Golden afternoon light across the Connemara landscape provides exceptional photography conditions.

Route 4: Expert Perspective on Spring Road Trips in Europe

A Travel Industry Perspective on Planning

Maria van den Berg, Senior Travel Consultant, EuroRoute Experiences, Amsterdam

“We started recommending spring road trips to clients 6 years ago. Summer routes were overcrowded and expensive. Spring changed everything for our customers.

The difference is remarkable. Our clients report 40% lower accommodation costs and significantly less road congestion. Satisfaction scores are consistently higher for spring departures.”

“The key advice we give is simple: book ferries and mountain passes early. Everything else can remain flexible. A spring road trip in Europe rewards those who stay open to unexpected villages and unplanned stops.”

Route 5: The Gorges du Verdon, France

The Gorges du Verdon is often called the Grand Canyon of Europe. This spectacular canyon in Provence, southern France, stretches 25 kilometres and drops 700 metres at its deepest point.

The Route des Cretes follows the canyon rim for most of its length. Views directly into the turquoise river below are available at multiple stopping points. Spring water levels are high, which makes the canyon even more visually impressive.

Nearby villages such as Moustiers-Sainte-Marie offer lavender products, local pottery, and Provencal cuisine. Combine this route with a visit to the Luberon for a classic southern France experience.

Route 6: The Picos de Europa, Northern Spain

The Picos de Europa mountains in Cantabria and Asturias are among the most dramatic landscapes on the Iberian Peninsula. The N-621 road connects Riano to Potes through deep gorges and river valleys.

Spring brings snow to the higher peaks while the valleys remain green and accessible. The contrast between the white summits and the lush lower landscape is exceptional. Wildlife including chamois, golden eagles, and brown bears lives in this national park.

Consequently, this route suits travellers who want scenic driving combined with hiking opportunities. The town of Potes serves as an excellent base for 2 to 3 days of exploration.

Conclusion: Plan Your Spring Road Trip in Europe Now

A spring road trip in Europe delivers experiences that other travel formats simply cannot match. You set the pace, choose the stops, and follow landscapes at your own rhythm. The 8 routes in this guide cover Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Ireland, and beyond. Each route offers peak seasonal conditions between April and June.

Therefore, begin your planning now. Book accommodation along your chosen route, review EU road regulations for each country, and prepare your vehicle for alpine or coastal driving conditions. A spring road trip across Europe in 2026 is one of the most rewarding travel experiences available to today’s explorer.

Drove the Amalfi Coast road in late April and the article is right about those bends near Positano. Narrow doesn’t quite cover it. But catching the ferry from Amalfi town to Salerno at the end, with the whole coastline spread out behind you, that made every stressful overtake completely worth it.

Done the Amalfi Coast twice now, once in July which was absolutely miserable traffic-wise, and once in late April which was a completely different experience. Spring really is the only sensible time for that drive. The roads are narrow enough without adding tour buses and hire cars three deep at every viewpoint. If that route is on the list, the timing advice is worth taking seriously.
