EU Ecolabel products: choose with confidence

The EU Ecolabel flower signals genuine environmental quality, here is how to use it as a practical buying tool.

EU Ecolabel products appear on supermarket shelves across Europe, yet most consumers never fully use the information the label actually provides.

What the EU Ecolabel actually means

The EU Ecolabel is the only EU-wide ISO 14024 Type I ecolabelling scheme. It is multi-criteria and tackles the main environmental impacts of products along their full lifecycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. That scope is broad, and it matters for household buyers.

The EU Ecolabel is third-party verified, which means independent experts are responsible for checking compliance with the EU Ecolabel criteria. This is a key point. The label is not a self-declaration by the manufacturer. A national authority in a Member State checks each product before the flower appears on the packaging.

Confronted with a wide variety of environmental claims and greenwashing, the scheme allows consumers to buy with more confidence. Manufacturers can use the label only after a national authority has verified that the product fulfils the scheme criteria. For practical shoppers, that process removes the guesswork.

Why performance is part of the criteria

Many consumers assume that a sustainable product works less well than a conventional one. For EU Ecolabel household cleaning products, this assumption does not hold. For the detergents sector, the EU Ecolabel applies to multiple product groups and is based on scientifically defined criteria developed through consultation with stakeholders. For detergents, environmental performance is closely linked to formulation and product use, including factors such as dosage, temperature and ingredient functionality.

The EU Ecolabel criteria represent a holistic approach, ranging from limits on the use of hazardous substances, sustainable sourcing of raw materials, recyclability and design of packaging, to proper guidance for the product’s use. So the criteria address both environmental impact and practical use together.

A revision of the EU Ecolabel scheme should lead to an improved indication of the most sustainable products, by better integrating product performance into its criteria, as well as objective risk-based assessments for ingredients. Ongoing revisions mean the scheme actively improves over time.

How to read the label and choose well

The first step is to look for the blue flower logo and confirm the product category. For the cleaning and hygiene products industry, there are Ecolabel criteria for six categories of products, including household products and those used for professional or institutional cleaning. These are household and institutional laundry detergents, household and institutional dishwasher detergents, hand dishwashing detergents, and hard surface cleaning products.

Next, use the EU Ecolabel product catalogue. The EU Ecolabel Product Catalogue provides information about environmentally friendly, high-quality products and where you can find them. A simple search by product type gives you a verified list of options available in your country.

Then compare on 3 practical factors: the concentration level of the formula (more concentrated means fewer doses and less packaging waste), the ingredient list for restricted substances, and the packaging recyclability. To be awarded the EU Ecolabel, goods and services must meet high environmental standards throughout their entire life cycle: from raw material extraction through production and distribution to disposal. The label also encourages companies to develop innovative products that are durable, easy to repair, and recyclable.

Expert perspective

The EU Ecolabel for household products is often underestimated as a performance tool. Consumers frequently focus on the environmental benefit alone, but the criteria are designed so that a product must also work effectively, otherwise it will not reduce environmental impact in real use. A laundry detergent that requires extra doses or a higher wash temperature to deliver results has a higher lifecycle footprint, not a lower one. The certification therefore connects directly to in-use performance. As the criteria for detergents undergo revision, industry professionals are pushing for even tighter integration of performance standards, so that the label becomes a more precise and credible signal for both buyers and procurement teams across European markets.

The market is growing: what that means for you

Over 100,000 products across the EU already bear the EU Ecolabel, meaning that they comply with rigorous ecological criteria and have a reduced environmental impact. More choice means you do not have to compromise on product type or brand preference.

The Europe eco-friendly cleaning products market was valued at USD 12.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 24.1 billion by 2033. This growth reflects real commercial momentum, not just consumer interest. Manufacturers invest in certification because demand is real and growing.

Choosing and promoting EU Ecolabel products makes a real contribution to the biggest environmental challenges of our time identified in the European Green Deal, such as reaching climate neutrality by 2050, shifting to a circular economy, and reaching the zero pollution ambition for a toxic-free environment. Each purchase decision connects to that wider agenda.

Conclusion: make the EU Ecolabel work for you

The EU Ecolabel is a practical tool, not just a symbol. It tells you that a product has passed rigorous certification across its full lifecycle, that its ingredients meet strict standards, and that its performance has been tested in real conditions. Use the official product catalogue before you shop. Filter by household category, compare concentration and packaging, and choose the EU Ecolabel option that fits your routine. Around 75% of Europeans trust that products with the EU Ecolabel have a lower environmental impact than similar products on the market. The EU Ecolabel removes ambiguity from a crowded shelf. Start using it as the decision tool it was designed to be.
